Durga Puja songs 2026: the Pujo playlist, from agomoni to Bijoya

Agomoni gaan, the dhak, the old Puja records, the film songs and the Dashami songs, picked day by day for Durga Puja 2026, and every one plays on this page.

The oldest Pujo songs are hardly about a goddess at all. In an agomoni song Uma is a married daughter coming home for the Puja days, and her mother Menaka has been counting since the last Dashami. Bengal has sung that visit since the eighteenth century. It is still the shape of a Pujo playlist in 2026, from the dhak on Ashtami morning to a Dev film song on Navami night, and it is why the last song on Dashami is the hardest one to play.

Agomoni gaan: where a Pujo playlist starts

Agomoni gaan are the songs of Uma's homecoming. Uma is Parvati, daughter of Giriraj Himalaya and Menaka and wife of Shiva, and in these songs she returns to her father's house just before Durga Puja. The Bengali Wikipedia article on agomoni songs names Ramprasad Sen as the first and the finest writer of them. Its page on Kamalakanta Bhattacharya (born 1772) puts him next after Ramprasad among the Shakta poets, and calls him the best at agomoni and Bijoya verses. The Bijoya songs come when the visit ends: the same family, sending her back.

They have lasted because the worry in them is an ordinary one. A mother wants to know how her daughter has been living in a pauper's house, since the husband is Shiva, the hermit who owns nothing. To follow these songs, a listener needs only to have waited for someone to come home for Pujo.

Anwesha Ganguly sings, and Aalo lists the song as traditional. The title is Menaka's question to her daughter, how did you live in Hara's house, and the whole of agomoni is in that one line.

Which Pujo songs to play on each day of Durga Puja 2026

The dates are from Drik Panchang's Durga Puja calendar for Kolkata. Shashthi spreads over two days this year: Bilva Nimantran on Friday 16 October, then Kalparambha and Akal Bodhon on Saturday 17 October. Belur Math holds both on Friday, Kalparambha at dawn and Bodhon in the evening. The same calendar lists Vijayadashami on Tuesday 20 October for most of India, and Bengal's immersion and sindoor khela on Wednesday 21 October. This list keeps Bengal's dates. If your para's puja follows the Gupta Press or Benimadhab Sil panjika, Saptami and Ashtami each come a day earlier, Saptami on Saturday 17 and Ashtami on Sunday 18 October. Pujas on that reckoning do not all agree on Navami and Dashami, so check your mandap's notice.

What was a Pujor gaan record?

For most of the last century, Pujo in Bengal came with new records. The Gramophone Company of India, which pressed records at Dum Dum from 1907 and sold them under the HMV label from 1909 to 2003, put out a batch of new Bengali songs before each Puja, with the lyrics printed in a booklet called Sharad Arghya.

Most Pujor gaan were not about the Puja. They were love songs, comic songs and modern Bengali songs, and the Puja was simply their release date. Bhanu Banerjee is the clearest case. His comic record Dhakar Gadoane did well enough in 1943 that he brought out a new record every Durga Puja after it.

Most of the famous non-devotional Puja records are not in our catalogue, so this list cannot play them. It has one Puja song from the old shelf, and one sign that the habit is still alive.

Dhaker taal: can you play the dhak at home?

You can, and if you are far from a pandal it is the most useful thing on this page. We carry two Saregama dhak tracks, each named for its day: Ashtami, at five minutes, and Dashami, at ten. The drummers credited on both are Phani Natta, Joydeb Nandy, Manindra Das and Brajakanta Nandy.

Ashtami's belongs to the morning. Put it on after anjali, loud enough to worry the neighbours a little. Keep Dashami's for the last evening.

Which film songs became Pujo songs?

Bengali cinema has long aimed at the Puja week, and a few of its songs outlived their films. Challenge 2 opened on 19 October 2012, in the Puja week, and Elo Je Maa is the song from it we would keep.

The film for a probashi's list is Srijit Mukherji's Uma (2018). Uma is a girl in Zurich with about two months to live who wants to see Durga Puja in Kolkata, and her father stages one for her, out of season. The film is based on the life of Evan Leversage, a boy from St George in Ontario. Anyone who has watched Pujo on a phone from another time zone understands that father.

Bijoya songs for Dashami

Bijoya songs are the other half of agomoni. Wikipedia's article on Agamani and Vijaya songs puts it simply: the homecoming, then, when the visit ends, the sorrow of parting, as Uma goes back to Shiva. On Dashami, married women play sindoor khela, putting vermilion on the goddess and on each other before the immersion. Then the processions leave for the ghats.

Bochor Bochor Aste Hobe

Akassh

Akassh and Haimanti, 2018. The title is what everyone asks of her at the ghat: you have to come every year. We end the week with this one.

More in the Pujo mood

The agomoni you played on Shashthi was a mother counting the days until her daughter came. The Bijoya song is the same mother, standing at the door. That is why the last song of the week is the hard one to play. Kolkata says it out loud on Dashami, too: asche bochor abar hobe, next year it happens again.

Playing Pujo from Bengaluru, London or New York

This year Ashtami is on Monday 19 October and Dashami on Wednesday 21 October, so for most Bengalis outside Bengal the big days fall in a working week. Build the week in order and let it run: agomoni on Friday or Saturday evening, the film songs over the weekend, the Ashtami dhak before work on Monday, and the Dashami dhak with Bochor Bochor Aste Hobe on Wednesday. 8.30 pm on Wednesday in Kolkata is 4 pm in London and 11 am in New York.

Every song above is in the Pujo mood, which picks up where any of them ends. Nazrul's Durga songs have a mood of their own, the Nazrul mood. And if you missed the dawn broadcast on Mahalaya, our Mahalaya post has the full Mahishasura Mardini and what time 4 am in Kolkata is where you live.
