Every Feluda story, in the order Satyajit Ray wrote them

Satyajit Ray wrote 35 complete Feluda stories between 1965 and 1996. Here they are in the order they were first published, where each first appeared, and the 23 you can play here.

Eshita GhoshPublished

Feluda was born in a children's magazine with a family history. The first story, Feludar Goendagiri, ran in Sandesh from December 1965. As Wikipedia's Feluda page notes, Sandesh had been founded by Ray's grandfather, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury; Ray himself had revived it in 1961 with the poet Subhas Mukhopadhyay, and by then he was co-editing it. Topshe tells that first story, and he tells every one after it. For the next thirty years a new Feluda turned up, more often than not, in the Puja issue of Desh or Sandesh, which is why, for many of us, he still belongs to autumn.

Reading them in order pays, and not only for tidiness. The cast grows as you go, the way a family does in a long novel. Jatayu does not exist until Sonar Kella, where he meets Feluda and Topshe on the train to Rajasthan; Maganlal Meghraj, the villain who keeps coming back, first appears in Joi Baba Felunath. Read out of order and Jatayu turns up before anyone has introduced him.

All 35, in order

The order and dates below are the story tables of English Wikipedia and Bengali Wikipedia, which agree on the order except in a few places. Where they disagree on a year or a magazine, the table says so. For stories that came out in the same year (Ghurghutiyar Ghatona and Joi Baba Felunath in 1975, for example) and for Kailashey Kelenkari, the order here is the Bengali page's. The Bengali table gives no date for Golapi Mukta Rahasya and places it after Robertsoner Ruby; this list keeps the English table's place for it, 1989.
