Durga Puja 2026 outfit ideas: what to wear each day and night, for women and men

A day look and a night look for each Puja day from Shashthi to Dashami, for women and men: which handloom, which colours and why, what to wear on your feet in Kolkata's October, and what it costs.

In Rabindranath's poem Pujar Saaj, from his 1903 collection Shishu, two brothers named Madhu and Bidhu run to their father in mid-Ashwin, a few days before the Puja to ask what he has bought them. It turns out to be two chintz shirts, and a pair of dhoti and chador. The harvest has failed that year, and the family has lost a great deal. Madhu throws the clothes in the dust because the Raybabus' son Gupi has a zari cap and a flowered satin shirt. Bidhu says he likes his. A hundred and twenty-three years on, the Puja wardrobe still carries that small ache of comparison, now with a phone camera attached. This guide takes Bidhu's side. What reads well at a Kolkata puja is rarely the costliest thing in the cupboard. It is the right cloth for the hour, the heat and the rite.

The plan below runs for six days, with a day look and a night look for women and for men, ethnic wear first. The dates and ritual times are from our Durga Puja 2026 day-by-day guide, which takes them from drikpanchang's Kolkata reckoning. If your para's puja follows the Gupta Press or Benimadhab Sil panjika, Saptami and Ashtami each come a day earlier, Saptami on Saturday 17 and Ashtami on Sunday 18 October, and the Sandhi Puja runs from 7.26 to 8.14 am on Monday. Pujas on that reckoning do not all agree on Navami and Dashami, so check your mandap's notice.

The whole plan in one table

Dashami, Wed 21 OctLaal paar sada, white with a red borderThe same saree, through the immersionWhite or cream panjabi, dhoti if you have oneCotton panjabi for the walk to the ghat

If you pack only three things, pack a cotton tant, a Garad or any off-white with a red border, and one silk for the evenings. Men can do the whole week on two cotton panjabis, one silk panjabi and a dhoti.

First, the weather: why cotton wins until sunset

The India Meteorological Department's 1991 to 2020 normals for Alipore put an October day at 32.3 °C and a night at 24.4 °C, with 76% relative humidity, 179.6 mm of rain and 7.4 rainy days in the month. Those are averages, not a forecast. But they explain why the woman in the heavy silk is fanning herself with the pandal map by eleven in the morning, and why the man in polyester has sweat marks by the second pandal.

Handloom cotton breathes, dries fast and can take a shower of rain without shame. Silk looks its best under lamps, when the air has cooled by a few degrees. Keep a cotton dupatta, gamchha or chador in the bag for sudden rain, and avoid anything that stains when wet. A pale chiffon with a dark print will show the first drop.

Shashthi, Fri 16 and Sat 17 Oct: tant for the day, a koti for the first big night

Shashthi falls on a Friday this year, and Bilva Nimantran is in the afternoon, 2.51 to 5.11 pm. If the day is a working one for you, this is the tant day: a cotton saree from Shantipur or Dhaniakhali, both registered as geographical indications for West Bengal, Shantipur in 2009-10 and Dhaniakhali in 2011-12, according to the list of India's registered geographical indications. A tant sits crisp at your desk and still looks like the Puja when you walk out at six.

Our pick of colour is mustard with a maroon border. It is the colour of turmeric and alta, it holds in afternoon light, and it does not fight the red and white you will wear later in the week. Pair it with a plain maroon blouse, small earrings, and flat leather sandals.

On Friday night, if you go out to the pandals, stay in cotton: a Dhaniakhali or Shantipuri in a darker shade for women, a cotton panjabi with the sleeves rolled for men.

Saturday 17 October is the first Saturday of the Puja, Shashthi's second day. By day, a Tangail cotton, light enough to walk the lanes in; at night, a tussar silk, which has the sheen of silk and some of the ease of cotton. For men, a khadi kurta by day, and at night one thing added: a sleeveless koti over an ivory kurta. A charcoal koti with white kantha running stitch looks worked on without looking like a costume, and it is the texture this season's men's lookbooks keep reaching for, in place of the check shirt. Loafers or leather sandals, not new ones.

Saptami, Sun 18 Oct: jamdani at dawn, Baluchari after dark

Saptami's rites begin before the sun. The Kola Bou is bathed at dawn, sunrise in Kolkata is at 5.34, and Saptami tithi runs only until 8.27 am. If you mean to walk behind the dhakis to the ghat, wear something that can take river steps and a crowd: a fine cotton jamdani, off-white, with the colour kept in the woven motifs. Jamdani was first called Dhakai, after Dhaka, and UNESCO inscribed the traditional art of jamdani weaving in 2013 as Bangladesh's. Weavers in West Bengal make it too. At dawn a sheer, pale saree catches what little light there is, and it is cool.

Men, this is the morning for a handloom cotton panjabi, knee-length, in indigo with a fine stripe, over a churidar. Put a gamchha-check scarf over one shoulder if you like. It is a Bengali cloth, it wipes a wet face, and it looks right in a photograph. Kolhapuri-style sandals are back in this year's men's edits, and they survive puddles better than suede.

Saptami night is the Baluchari's. Its pallu tells a story in woven panels, scenes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana on many modern pieces, and it was once woven in Murshidabad. Today Bishnupur and the villages around it make the real ones, and the saree has been a registered geographical indication since 2011. The weave nearly died under British rule. In the twentieth century the artist Subho Thakur invited the weaver Akshay Kumar Das to his centre to learn jacquard weaving, and the Baluchari came back to life. A maroon Baluchari with a bottle-green blouse is the classic pairing: both colours deepen under yellow pandal light instead of washing out.

Ashtami, Mon 19 Oct: the Garad morning

Ashtami is the morning to plan backwards from the clock. Ashtami tithi ends at 10.51 am on Monday 19 October and Sandhi Puja starts at 10.27, so most pujas will probably finish anjali before then. Be dressed and at the mandap by nine. At a mandap that follows the Gupta Press panjika, anjali is over by about 7 am on Monday. Your shoes stay outside the mandap, so wear a pair you can slip off and find again.

For women it is the Garad morning. Garad is a pure silk woven in Murshidabad and Birbhum, and it is worn at pujas, above all at the Ashtami puja of Durga Puja and for sindoor khela on the day of immersion. It was registered as a geographical indication in 2024. Many of the Garads on the state handloom co-operative Tantuja's shop are off-white with red: a plain red border, a double jacquard, a pallu worked with motifs. Off-white and red are the colours of the rite itself. Stand in a mandap on Ashtami morning and you will see the same two colours on the goddess, on the women and on the dhak. The red border also forgives a flower stain.

This season the shop rails show Garad crossing into other weaves. On 30 September Tantuja's own shop listed a Garad woven with jamdani motifs in mustard, a Garad Korial in off-white and rust orange, and a Garad Baluchari in off-white and charcoal. Korial, the Garad's sister weave, received its own geographical indication in 2024. If a plain Garad feels like your mother's, one of these keeps the rite and changes the voice.

Men, Ashtami morning is the dhoti's. A white dhoti with a thin border, pleated in front, and a cream tussar or silk panjabi to below the knee. Carry a folded chador with a narrow red border over one shoulder, which is what the boys' father brought home in the poem, and which still looks correct beside a Garad. Tie the dhoti at home the night before once, as a trial run, if you have not worn one since your last Puja.

Ashtami night can stay in silk. Keep the Garad on if you started early and the evening is cool, or change into a darker silk. Men can move to a maroon or bottle-green silk panjabi. The dhak at the Sandhi minute, if you are far from a mandap, is below.

More in the Pujo mood

By Navami the feet hurt and the bhog queue is long. Wear the easiest cotton you own in the day, a light tant or a soft tussar for women, the most crumpled panjabi for men. Our Durga Puja bhog guide explains what you are queueing for.

Navami night is the last full night before the immersions, and the one we would give to Indo-western, because the rites are done for the day and the pandals are at their most crowded. For women, a black handloom saree with a thin gold border, the pleats neat, a slim oxidised-silver belt at the waist and a short woven jacket over the blouse. Black and gold carry under street lights, and black hides a day of dust. We would keep black for the night out, away from the mandap's ritual hours.

Men, a short mustard kurta, draped off-white dhoti-style trousers and an open sleeveless jacket in deep teal raw silk. It is a dhoti-panjabi with the formality taken out, which suits a night of walking. And if Navami night ends with a story in the cab home, there is one below about a saree.

Dashami, Wed 21 Oct: laal paar sada and sindoor khela

Dashami tithi runs until 2.11 pm on Wednesday 21 October. For sindoor khela, women traditionally wear laal paar sada, a white saree with a red border, often a cotton tant or a Garad. By custom the rite belongs to married women, which is also why it has its critics, and your mandap's own practice is the one to follow. Whatever you wear, wear something you do not mind seeing red on for good.

Men, white or cream again: a cotton panjabi you can walk to the ghat in, a dhoti if you own one. After the immersion come pronam and kolakuli, and elders notice clean white more than they notice a label. The whole order of the day, from debi baran to the shanti jal, is in our day-by-day guide.

Colour pairs that work, and why

  • Off-white and red: the colours of the rite, for Ashtami morning and Dashami. Nothing else looks as right in a mandap.
  • Mustard and maroon: a daytime pair, warm without being loud, and it photographs well in shade.
  • Maroon and bottle green: for Baluchari and silk evenings, because both deepen under yellow light.
  • Off-white with teal or rust in the motifs: for dawn and humid mornings, since the pale ground stays cool.
  • Indigo and white: the men's cotton pair, and the easiest one to repeat without anyone noticing.
  • Black and gold: for Navami night only. It hides dust and carries under street lights.

The nine-colour lists that go round every autumn (a colour for each day) belong to Navaratri. Bengal's Puja has one colour rule that matters, to our mind: the red and white of Ashtami and Dashami.

Footwear for pandal-hopping

A night of pandals is a long walk on uneven road, in a crowd, sometimes through water. Wear flats with a back strap, kolhapuris or broken-in leather sandals. Block heels at most, and only on Saptami night if you are driven door to door. Never wear new shoes on Ashtami: you will take them off for anjali and put them back on over a blister. Keep a plastic bag in your bag for the shoes at the mandap and for rain. Our Kolkata pandal guide has the metro stops and an order for one evening in North Kolkata.

Shankha, pola and sindoor: what they mean before you wear them

The white and red bangles in the pictures are shankha and pola. Shankha is cut from a conch shell, and married Bengali Hindu women wear it with pola, sindoor and the noa, many believe for the husband's well-being, according to the Bengali Wikipedia article on the shankha. When a woman is widowed, her shankha is by custom taken off or broken. So in a Bengali home they are not costume jewellery. If you are not married, red and white glass bangles give you the same colours without borrowing the meaning. The same care goes for sindoor in the parting.

Everything else is free to borrow: alta on the feet, a red or black bindi, a string of white flowers in the hair, gold-look or oxidised silver earrings. Men need a watch, a chador or scarf, and nothing that jingles during anjali.

What it costs: a budget note

Handloom need not be dear. On 30 September Tantuja, the West Bengal State Handloom Weavers' Co-operative Society, listed cotton Tangail sarees from Rs 1,334 to Rs 4,620, Shantipuri from Rs 1,890 to Rs 2,478, and cotton jamdani from Rs 2,163 to Rs 10,290. Garad silk ran from Rs 9,261 to Rs 18,081, and silk Baluchari from Rs 13,020 to Rs 47,250. The Khadi India shop, run by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, listed a full-sleeve cotton kurta at Rs 1,307, a short kurta at Rs 809 and a fine muslin dhoti at Rs 972, sold out that day. Prices change, so check them on the day you buy.

Our advice, if the budget is tight: spend on one Garad or one good silk panjabi, and wear cotton for the other five days. That is also, as it happens, what Kolkata's October asks of you.

In the poem, Madhu gets Gupi's satin shirt in the end and struts home to tell everyone that Bidhu is wearing only chintz. Rabindranath leaves it there, and so will we. Bidhu's line is the one worth keeping, I like this cloth. Wear the one you like, in the right hour, and the Puja will do the rest.
