Naihati Boro Maa Kali Puja 2026

Boro Maa of Naihati stands more than 20 feet tall, yet on Kali Puja night the first question is a plain one: how do I get there, and how do I get back? This year that night is Sun 8 Nov 2026. Naihati is a town of its own, up the Sealdah main line, and the temple sits a short way from Naihati Junction, on the river side. Below are the trains from Sealdah and from Howrah, the road, the ferry from Chinsurah and the rules for the night. The trust has not announced its 2026 schedule yet, and the police have not announced their arrangements. This page will carry both once they are out.

Sunday, 8 November

The 2026 Kali Puja night is Sunday, 8 November. Kali is worshipped late at night, at nishita, and for Kolkata drikpanchang sets that window at 10.55 to 11.46 pm. Amavasya, the new-moon tithi, sets in at 11.27 am that Sunday and runs until 12.31 pm on Monday, 9 November. These are the almanac's times, not the temple's: the trust has not announced its own schedule for the night yet.

The temple

The history below is English Wikipedia's wherever we say so. The distance is in a straight line from the station, not a walking distance.

  • Boro Maa, Naihati

    Outside Kolkata

    Naihati, North 24 Parganas

The puja and the temple are run by the Naihati Barakali Puja Samity Trust. English Wikipedia dates the puja to 1923. The puja crossed its hundredth year in 2023, and a new temple opened that year. The clay image is more than 20 feet tall. Wikipedia names Bhavesh Chakraborty as the founder, and says he began the puja after seeing the towering images of Nabadwip's Rash festival. Kali Puja is not the only night here: the temple also marks the new-moon nights, Kaushiki Amavasya among them. On Kali Puja night many devotees perform dandi (lying down and measuring the road to the temple with their bodies) to keep a vow. When the puja is over, a large procession takes the image to the river for immersion. By Wikipedia's account the image stays for five days first, and devotees pull it to the Ganga on a trolley.

Nearest railway station: Naihati Junction (Sealdah main line), 0.38 km

The trust has no website that gives the temple's daily opening hours. The trust's schedule for Kali Puja 2026 is not announced yet.

How to reach Boro Maa from Kolkata

By train from Sealdah

From Sealdah, take a local on the main line, the Sealdah-Ranaghat line, and get off at Naihati Junction. English Wikipedia puts Naihati about 38 km from Sealdah by rail, with Kankinara as the stop before it. The temple is about 400 m from the station in a straight line, on its west side, towards the river. Locals on this line are frequent. For a journey time, go by the live running on NTES before you set out. Eastern Railway has announced no extra trains for Kali Puja night yet.

By train from Howrah

From Howrah, take a Howrah-Bandel local to Bandel Junction and change there. The Bandel-Naihati branch runs through Hooghly Ghat and Garifa and crosses the river to Naihati. On the platform at Naihati, the railway's yellow board tells passengers to change there for Bandel. On this route too, go by NTES for the timing.

By road

By car there are two ways out of Kolkata. One is Barrackpore Trunk Road (BT Road) from Shyambazar to Barrackpore, then State Highway 1 on through Ichapore to Naihati. The other is the Kalyani Expressway from Nimta More, which runs along Naihati's eastern edge. We have found no reliable road distance or driving time, so we give none. Parking and road closures for Kali Puja night are not announced yet: watch the Barrackpore police notices.

By ferry from Chinsurah

Coming from the Hooghly side? A state-run ferry crosses from Mechuabazar ghat at Chinsurah to Naihati. The jetty on the Naihati side carries the Transport Department's sign, “Naihati Boroma Ferry Service”, and the ghat is close to the temple. No timetable has been published, so ask at the ghat before you plan your way back.

Kali Puja night in Naihati: police, crackers, phone numbers

Naihati is not Kolkata Police's area. It comes under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, which has put out no Kali Puja notice for 2026 yet. Entry and queue arrangements at the temple are not announced yet either. Crackers follow one statewide rule: anywhere in West Bengal, the only ones that may be sold or burst are green crackers carrying a QR code. It comes from a Calcutta High Court order of 11 Oct 2022, which the state Pollution Control Board then passed on. Naihati's own cracker hours for 2026 are not announced yet. To reach the police that night, call Naihati Police Station on 033 2581 2389. In an emergency, dial 112.
